McErrick Buys A New Effects Processor

Boss GX-700

My Boss GX700 failed on me, just out of the blue. I haven’t a clue what was going on, but all of a sudden the “master” volume just gave up.

A friend measured the impedance on all the INs and OUTs, but couldn’t find anything out of the ordinary. He did, however, advice me to create a back-up of all the programs, and execute a reset to the factory presets.

Luckily, I soon found a second-hand replacement unit for a VERY fair price, so I could replace it in less than a week.

After a couple of days of intense testing at home, using all the loops of both this new GX700 and my Blackstar HT-5, I found out something I wasn’t too happy about: the Boss unit SERIOUSLY sucks tone from a guitar!

For the time being, I’ve gone back to the Zoom 9120, but I do miss the clever internal design of the Boss GX700 dearly. It makes my rig so very flexible, and works really well with my MIDI foot controller. Especially the whole concept of MIDI expression pedal seems to be invented especially for Boss.

So what to do? Incredibly transparent tone with only basic effects (Chorus, Delay and Reverb), or all the features in the world (I don’t think I’ve mentioned the built-in, MIDI-controllable tuner and the manky but oh-so useful noise gate yet) with a half sucked-up tone.. Thoughts are welcome!
